In celebration of World Car-Free Day, DTC announces that it will provide free rides on all DART services, including DART Connect and Paratransit, on Friday, September 22, 2023. This is part of ongoing efforts to encourage drivers to “Dump The Pump” avoiding rising gas prices and saving money by riding public transit.
World Car-Free Day is a worldwide initiative to encourage the public to take a break from driving and explore alternative modes of transportation. Some of the ways the public can partake is to:
- Use available public transit options such as buses, rail, and microtransit
- Walk or ride a bicycle for short, easy trips
- Find rides and earn rewards by registering with Delaware Commute Solutions
“We continue to focus on efficiency both in our service to our customers and our energy use with our investment in low and no emission buses. There are numerous individual and large-scale benefits for using public transportation and we are proud to join this international effort and observance,” said Secretary of Transportation Nicole Majeski.
“Car Free Day is a great opportunity to take advantage of public transportation in Delaware, and we will be offering free rides on all DART services on Friday, September 22,” said John Sisson, CEO of the Delaware Transit Corporation. “Using public transit is easy thanks to our mobile app, and we encourage anyone who has never ridden or hasn’t in some time, to give it a try, free of charge.”
According to the American Public Transportation Association, traveling by public transportation is 10 times safer per mile than traveling by automobile. Drivers can reduce their chance of being in an accident by over 90%, simply by taking public transit.
