DART, working with Wilmington Councilwoman Shané Darby, has completed several bus stop improvements in Wilmington’s 2nd District. Councilwoman Darby contacted DART last spring requesting improvements for the district’s most heavily used bus stops.
New bus shelters were installed along Market St. at 19th St. and opposite 20th St., on Washington St. at Concord Ave. and on 18th St. at Baynard Blvd. The new shelter installations, which include benches and solar lighting, will also receive weekly cleanings and trash removal. A new bench was also installed at the bus stop on Washington St. at 26th St. and another will be added on Washington St. at 30th St.
John Sisson, DTC’s Chief Executive Officer stated, “We know the importance of connecting people to their destinations, safely, and efficiently. Our team is continually looking for ways to improve the customer experience. By adding amenities to our bus stops such as shelters, benches and lighting, our riders are provided with a more comfortable waiting area to access their destinations.”
“As a council person, it is always important to make sure that citizens have access to public transportation which includes having safe, well-lit shelters and benches to wait for the bus. These small, but necessary changes are vital in making an impact on the everyday lives of residents who rely on our public transportation system. I will continue to push for community development and urban planning in the 2nd district,” said Councilwoman Darby.
Councilwoman Darby’s request for new bus shelters was supported by Senator Darius Brown, D-Wilmington. He stated, “As a former City Councilman, I understood the importance of Councilwoman Shané Darby’s request for me to help her provide bus shelters to our City residents,” Senator Brown said. “Local government is a key partner with the State when it comes to delivering public transportation that improves the quality of life for our neighbors and protects them from the elements. Thank you to Councilwoman Darby, DART and the City of Wilmington for working to make sure our residents have bus shelters in their neighborhoods during this year’s chilly winter weather.”
